There are so many things to love about the Columbia area — between outdoor activities, community festivals, and other entertainment and dining options, the hardest part of finding something to do is choosing! Columbia has a true community feel. Our favorite activity is heading to the downtown waterfront for live music, movies, and other events. There is something different happening every week! Our favorite places to eat are Clyde’s, The Ale House, and Royal Taj. If you are looking for something more casual with a neighborhood feel, Bagel Bin and David’s Natural Market are within walking distance. The downtown waterfront and the mall are also nearby, with additional dining options and a movie theater.

Feel like cooking at home instead? Take your pick of Columbia’s grocery stores. In addition to Safeway, Giant, and Harris Teeter, Columbia has Whole Foods, David’s Natural Market, Wegman’s, and Trader Joe’s. If you like to buy in bulk, try Costco or BJ’s. Columbia also has two home improvement stores, Target, and the mall. When we bought the property, we were drawn to the sense of home we felt when we walked in. The open design is a wonderful space both for entertaining, and for enjoying a relaxing evening at home. We enjoy sitting on the sunporch with a cup of tea and a book, cooking in the custom kitchen, welcoming friends and family, and heading right out the door onto the pathways to explore Columbia on foot and bike.

Columbia’s commitment to a sustainable, active lifestyle convinced us to move here, and to stay. The pathway system covers nearly 94 miles around town, taking you from home to parks and lakes, pools and gyms, and village centers and shops. It’s easy and fun to get around on foot and on bike, even more so since the town invested in a bike-share program. The village centers offer programming throughout the year, designed to help neighbors get to know each other and increase personal investment in the communities.

The local schools are a big draw for families with kids. The Howard County school system is one of the nation’s top and it’s easy to see why, from the commitment of the teachers and the involvement of families in making their schools the best they can be.

Our utility costs are less than we expected and better than many of our neighbors, per the home energy reports provided by our utility company (BGE). New windows and new appliances means greater efficiency; across the year our BGE bill averages $35/month. And we love having a gas stove! Deering Woods is serviced by both Comcast Xfinity and Verizon FiOS.
